FPS? - KenC - 06-27-2021

New here, but reloading for a while. Just did some preliminary testing of the McGowen 24" with Barnes 105gr Match Burners over 28.3/28.6(2780fps avg/28.9 gr(2813fps avg) of LVR. Each grouped rather well, but was not concerned as this was for testing was for low SD with the last two being single digits. Now comes the seating depth(these were .015" off the lands) to get the groups as small as possible. What kind of velocities are y'all seeing with 105s? Just curious. Have a great safe day out there. Smile

Welcome aboard Ken!. I'm doing 2450 with 105 gr RDFs and Varget out of a 16". That makes everyone in these parts scratch their head and think to themselves "why would he even bother?"

RE: FPS? - Dino11 - 06-28-2021

29.4 of Lever and Nosler 105 RDF's net me around 2830 to 2850FPS, depends on temperature and which gun I use.

I was shooting Berger 109 long range hybrids today over 30.5 of Lever getting 2940FPs and sub .5 MOA on a couple of 5 shot groups, the rest of the groups were .5 to .7 MOA. Wasn't having the best day at the range today. 22" barrel.

Thanks for the info. Those are some high numbers. Gas or bolt? I think I have a little more room from looking at the brass. Hornady puts the max charge for 105s at 29.7gr of LVR for a gas gun. Quickload puts it at 28.9gr. The numbers are not very close but it gives me a good start. Going to test the capacity of the resized Grendel cases and reenter the data to see what I come up with.

If you are using Quick Load and modifying a Grendel load... it's not accurate. I know of three folks that have done this and spent hours scratching their heads try to figure out why the numbers did not jive. It just doesn't work very well.

The 30.5 loads were for a bolt gun, the 29.4 load is gas gun, and pretty much what I use for both 105 and 108 loads. I have used the 29.7 but got better accuracy with 29.4. I need to make correction on the FPS, the number should of been 2740 not 2840. I had to go look it up in my notes, it just didn't seem right with the high number. But the bolt gun is screaming in the 2900's pretty consistently. But it is a longer barrel at 22".

I resized some Starline Grendel cases and trimmed them to 1.480 and got 34gn of H2O, same with the Hornady ARC brass.

From Bolt Gun: I’ve found H4895 has worked really well for the heavier bullets.
Savage 10 24” Shaw Barrel 1-7 twist 5R
105 Lapua HPBT OTM: H4895 TWO NODES:
1: 26.4 (2768 FPS With SD of 8.7) Avg grp: .502”
2: 27.4 (2831 FPS with SD of 2.2) Avg grp: .553”
105 Hornady BTHP: 27.4 of H4895 (2812 FPS with SD of 5.7) Avg Grp: .523”

I’ve also tested AR-Comp with good results also. Not as fast, however, great SD’s and good accuracy.

How much of the AR Comp did you use? I have a couple pounds of it I would like to try.

RE: FPS? - skyrep - 06-30-2021

Dino11,
I used 26.6 of AR-Comp (please work up) for the Berger Match Hybrid Target (2.295 COAL) in my bolt gun.
Using the BR4 Primers got me better SDs. and velocities than the CCI 450. Accuracy avg: .44"-.555" , all were five shot groups.

26.6 - AR-Comp and CCI 450 Primer: 2749 fps / SD: 6.9
26.6 - AR-Comp and CCI BR4 Primer: 2757 fps / SD: 4.8

I am using the 6mm ARC already in quickload and just modifying the case capacity from what it there. I am going to work with it some more. I will punch your numbers of H2O in and see what I get. Will test my cases, again, after next round prep. Thanks for the info.
