With release of the 6 MM ARC I immediately was focused on the AR-15 and micro actions chambered for the 6 ARC. Last night I realized the 6 MM ARC might be a very good cartridge for the AK platform.
My choice in the AK was the 5.45x39 mm as chambered in the AK-74. With the CSSPECS 6.5 Grendel magazines for the AK it appears the 6 ARC might make the AK-74 and even better intermediate caliber carbine.
I looked at Evocatus Strategic web site and I didn’t see any mention of the 6 ARC. ES is selling AK’s chambered in 6.5 Grendel and are releasing an AK mag for the 6.5 Grendel. A quality AK gas piston rifle could see the benefit of an accurate intermediate cartridge with increased effective range over the 5.45 or 5.56 variants.
The Chinese 5.8x42 mm cartridge ballistics are similar to the 6 ARC but the PLA military ammunition isn’t reported to produce accuracy up to western military standards. Just curious if anyone else has an opinion on the feasibility of an AK chambered in 6 ARC. An AK-74 in 6 ARC with Barnual 6 MM ARC steel cased ammo might be fun.

I'd like to see a modernized — and affordable — AK (with Picatinny rails on top cover) chambered in 6.5 Grendel and 6mmARC.

The affordable part is a big hurdle right now when you can buy an AR-15 with better ergos and accuracy for less money. Throw in expensive AK 6.5 Grendel mags and I basically don’t need one that bad.
I have been watching PSA AK’s in 5.56 or 6.5 Grendel but they just haven’t gotten them to market. PSA has got so much going on they can’t meet demand on a lot of their products.
A Friend has a AK-74 which I like but not enough to lay down my money.

Great thinking, VC. if it leads to Barnual steel case in 6 ARC I'm all for it!

There might be hope seeing how there is a Wolf steel case 300 Black Out cartridge recently released. I just wish Barnual would use a quality bullet with high BC in the 6 ARC. If the steel cased ammo could get a solid 2 MOA accuracy at .75 to a $1 more a box than 6.5 Grendel steel cased they could sell all they could import.

You mean, to produce a mini-sniper rifle that's smaller and lighter than the SVD, for use by Spetsnaz or other Russian special forces, like was done with the Barrett 6mm REC7 rifle?
It seems to me like that should be technically feasible, although I very much doubt that the Russians would want to use 6 ARC, due to its 30-degree shoulder and minimal case taper.

I wondered about the case taper which would require different magazines in the AK-74. The Wolf/Barnual 6.5 Grendel ammunition is reliable even though the case has less taper than the 5.45 or 7.62x39. Seeing how the Soviets fought in Afghanistan with the longer distance threats there are better cartridges than the 7.62x39 or 5.45x39. In a true military engagement where rules of engagements don’t interfere there are better tools for long distance engagements than the AK-47/74, like crew served weapons. Certain militaries might be willing employ these heavier weapons without concern for collateral damage.
Other than the magazines being different I prefer the 6.5 Grendel to 7.62x39. In an AK-74 the 6 ARC might not be much more difficult to control in full auto than the 5.45x39. The 6 ARC looks to have several advantages in an AK-74, no decrease in ammo capacity, flatter shooting with higher energy on target. With the Russians using more optics and having graduated iron sights the 6 MM ARC could increase the effective range of the AK-74.
There are civilian shooters in the US that really like the AK carbines and there might be a market for the 6 ARC with these shooters.

I think it would be very interesting to see how performance of a 6mm AK74 would compare to 5.45mm.
So, when do you start building one?

It’d have to be a semi auto as Illinois doesn’t permit machine guns. I’m not running for Sheriff so I could get one through the Department. That would be my only option other than moving to a different state.
I bought a Romanian AK training rifle (AKT 98) in 22 LR. I’ve shot a Friend’s AK-74 and I enjoy shooting them but I really don’t have the time right now to start another project.
