Interesting range session today

I loaded up some Hornady SST's with H380 and another batch with RL15.  With the H380's I  used CCI 450's, but just for the heck of it, I used BR4's with the RL15 loadings.  No surprises with the H380: good groups at 29.1 and 2504fps and somewhat tighter groups with 29.7 grains that I got 2547.

Keeping everything else the same, but changing to RL15 and BR4 primers, I was beating Hornady's estimated MV's by a noticeable amount.  With 26.9 grains, I measured 2577fps, compared to H's 2400; es was 30, sd was 12.  Went up to 27.5 grains and got 2625 compared to H's 2450; and the es was 10 and the sd was 4.  At 28.0, MV was 2681 compared to 2500 estimate.  The es was 5 and the sd was 2.  I'm going to have to really scrub this loading.  I'll build them the same way and check them out to see if these were just an anomaly or the real thing.  Through all 30 rounds at the different load levels, there were no pressure signs at all.

Definitely interesting. What was that barrel length again?
With Lever I can get the 95 sst's up close to 2800, 20" faxon.
I graphed both Trashy's and my barrel, both were definitely faster than Hornady data for same powder loads.

It's a 18 inch barrel, grayfox.  I'm thinking I can safely push this load up a bit; I may run out of case space before I reach the safe pressure limits.  Compressed loads are definitely coming in the near future, and these BR4's that I've used for so long in my 6PPC may have found a place in the ARC.

Have you tried RL15 yet?

I think you will get better results with compressed loads, you are taking out empty case volume from the equation. I loaded up some compressed loads yesterday for a range trip this weekend.

I'll be interested to hear about your results. What powder/bullet/primer have you loaded?

Leverevelution, Nossler RDF 105's, Hornady 108 ELDM, CCI 450 Magnum primer.

May load up some Hornady 100 Interlocks and some 100 Sierra Game Kings but those will not e compressed, they are to short.

May go to the gun shop and see if I can find some lighter bullets, I want to try some H322. I love that powder in my 5.56 AR's. My precision one shoots sub MOA all day long without even trying very hard. And the stuff is one of the cleanest burning powders I have ever used, and easy on your barrel to.

Will do, taking the chrony with us. Went to get some lighter bullets in the 80 to 90 gn range and they did not have any, but I did get something I have wanted for a while now.

Frankford Arsenal Case Trim and Prep Center. I have been trying to find one of these, they are either priced at 240.00 plus, or out of stock everywhere. I was looking around and stumbled across one for 180.00... it had to come home with me, it was calling me out. I was so excited about the find I forgot to get some ammo boxes, the other item I went there to get.

That prep center had to be priced wrong, it was the price of the one without the trimmer on it.

And all my little children I made yesterday and today.

Good score on the case prep center! Looking at all those little children it appears that you may have a full range day ahead of you. We look forward to hearing your results.

I loaded up a few Hornady Interlocks and discovered that they had a bit of a problem feeding.  (Someone mentioned this problem of soft, lead tipped bullets not feeding correctly.)  So before you load up too many of them or the Game Kings, you may want to do a small test batch and just try cycling them through your rifle.  I played around with COAL clear out to 2.20 and the cartridges still were hesitant to go into battery, and showed marks on the lead tips and the bullet itself, right at the joint of the lead tip.  If any of you reading this have a solution to the problem I'd like to hear about it.

I have already shot both the Game Kings and the Interlocks, I didn't have the issues that were mentioned. When loading these rounds you need to pay special attention to how far you set the shoulder back. At least that is what I am finding, makes all the difference in the way this round loads. This is somewhat of a finicky round to reload and get it just right. And I think I have it figured out now.

Thanks, Dino; I'll try working on the shoulder set-back.  Did you find you needed to set it further back or move it forward a bit?

I had to set it back, my chamber is .006 short of spec. Your situation may be different, but these are my obsevations. I am finding that cases fired from two different guns varies b etween the two, but as stated one has a tight chamber.

Using the SAAMI spec the "B" datum line to case head per spec is 1.190 -.007, so your minimum spec should be 1.183. If you measure an unfired Hornady factory load it is at the minimum of the spec 1.183.

On our Faxon barrel the cases grew past the max case length to 1.194. Traditionally folks will only bump a case shoulder back .002. If you do this on your cases you are still going to be past the maximum spec. Maybe not a bad thing traditionally, as you have now resized your brass to fit your chamber. But on another note you are still outside the maximum spec for the cartridge. I believe with this round, and the use of mags that are designed for a different round this is somewhat of an issue. It is only speculation on my part. And I would have had more data had my son not mixed my brass from our last range outing. So I am only passing on what I have found so other folks can observe what is happening for their own particular situation.

For my Odin barrel I have to bump the shoulder back to 1.183, which is the minimum spec for the cartridge, remember the chamber is .006 short. So the case is at out of box factory spec and I have not experienced the feeding issues others are experiencing. Some folks are saying they can not use the ELander grendel mags, I have one of them and it is the one mag that I use the most. At this point all this info is only speculation, as I need more data, which I would have had my son just left things alone. I know he was only trying to help, and I wasn't mad just a little disappointed because it created a lot more work for me to process about 300 fired cases.

OK, thanks, Dino! I'll check the shoulder and experiment with bumping it back if it's out of spec.

right. 1.183-1.190 at the 0.350 datum line (ie, headspace).
