87 Berger's VLD... maybe
#1
I ordered a couple boxes of this 87 Berger hunting VLD bullet.  Going to try them in my 20" AR barrel... I've never found "the ONE" for this barrel, although the 90 sierra tgk was (is) close.  But trouble is, Sierra isn't making many more of them, they've been OOS along with the 100 tgk for nigh onto a year.  I don't like placing my bets on a pill that you can't be sure will be around when you need to reorder.
So.  These bergers have a lot of good reviews, mostly in .243's but some 6 Remmies, and I found them on ammoseek not too  $$$.
As an approximation I loaded some 88 berger's, the flat base, since they are vld and I can load them out to 2.260, under 87 Vmax data for Lvr, 30.3-31.2.  Pretty close except the 88's can load longer.
Boy was the range hot today, 98-102!! But I got some chrony data for them, about the MV range I was expecting, 2800-2888.  So when these 87's arrive I'm going to do some loads for them.  BC is .427 and the speed is up fast enough that I can feel ok using them as a deer round out east here.

Ill be surprised if the Bergers don't meet or exceed your hopes.

As for heavier projectiles, Hunting & target Power pro 2000 or surplus SMP 763 has been a common ingredient for accuracy success in my bolt actions. Can't speak for an AR scenario as that has not been my cup of tea.

My chrony on the 20" for them says 30.9, 2910, sd-2.6. 31.2 is over-press according to my grt model of it (2946). I need to shoot 30.9 now for a few groups to see what OAL I settle in at.
'Course my 90 tgk's shot 2837, sd-7.0, still a good one but sierra hasn't made these (or the 100 tgk) for quite a while.
All of these are with Lvr.

Thank you for the information.  Are you using a jump or jamming them?

I never jam. Besides these are too short for that. Don't have my notes in front of me but I recall the seating was about 2.200", this put the bottom of the .243 right about the shoulder/neck junction. Then a lee fcd crimp.
Max oal for them was about 2.260, again as I recall.

These things shoot really good.  I ladder tested them yesterday with LVR and CFE 223.  Shot them at the same session as 90 eldx and 90 TGK.  They were the most accurate with both powders.
