  Anyone try a 7 twist 6mm BHW?
Posted by: StoneHendge - 08-23-2023, 04:33 AM - Forum: 6mmARC AR15s and Semi-Autos - Replies (2)

Has anyone tried a 6mm 7 twist Black Hole Weaponry barrel? Lurkers are free to respond!

My 8 twist standard profile 18" 243 LBC is still going strong at somewhere between 5.5-6k rounds. I've gone back to it for my practical AR match (out to 700 yards) since the MD has been making it harder the last few months and my 7 lb 16" ARC is just a little too hard to handle for what it needs to go through now.

I loaded up some 95 gr VLDs with Varget and got MOA or better accuracy with a Magneto strapped on across 1.5 grains. Ended up at 27.8 gr at 2550 where the best SD is. It's real nice and soft shooting (I can see everything), has more than enough for 700 yards and goes exactly where it's supposed to (unlike my experience with 95 gr SMKs back when Sierra actually used to make them).

I'm probably going to put at least 150/month through it moving forward and ride her until she craps out, but in the meantime, I'm contemplating ordering a 7 twist ARC or 243 LBC (I think he'll do a .136" boltface these days) next time there's a sale, but just wonder if anyone has actual experience with his polygonal rifling at that twist rate - it's a relatively new offering for him in 6mm.

I'm probably going to go with another BHW for this application since he can do a "National Match" contour which is 1" diameter from the extension to a mid-length gas port (and then go to .75") - that'll put another half pound or so between the magwell and bipod where it rides a bag on a barricade and suck up more heat on fast strings - just debating if I should stick with an 8 or go to a 7 so I can do the long sexy 105s and up if I want. TIA!

From the UK. Always interested in something different, doesn't have to be new, just not mainstream. 6mm ARC is my latest thing and I like it!

  6mm ARC in the UK
Posted by: New_to_Six - 08-22-2023, 07:15 AM - Forum: 6mmARC Build Help & Troubleshooting - Replies (4)

The 6mm ARC has not gone unnoticed here in the UK and I have had one on one of my AR-15 lowers for some time now. It works well. There is a real shortage of parts here, like a real shortage. I had to import my set of Lee dies from the US myself ($97!) and forget ammunition or brass, I have converted 6.5mm Grendel (Lapua) brass and this seems to work really well. So far so good, but I decided that what I really needed to stretch this things legs was a bolt gun. So I have a couple Rem 700 actions in .308 and last week managed to buy these:

They were Unique Alpine TPG3 barrels brand new still in the wrapper, one is a 1:8 6mm and the other is a 1:8 6.5mm. The 6.5 will become a Creedmoor (as soon as the reamer arrives) and the 6mm will become the 6mm ARC. I already have a reamer from Dave Manson, from whom I have bought a great many reamers over the years but the 6.5 Creedmoor reamer is coming from a small company in the Ukraine (you gotta help out when you can, right?) I did order headspace guages when I ordered the reamer so we are good to go.

I removed the barrel extensions last night (Locktighted on) so I have plenty to go at machining the threads and these are substantial barrels, plenty on there. They were destined for a firearm that enjoys an enviable reputation as an accurate long range precision tool so you can imagine how well they are made. I am your UK equivalent to a FFL here in the UK so I can get on and do these things, it IS getting hard though and there is a distinct gun grab going on at the minute so it's not straightforward over here. I will keep you all updated as I go along.

  Reloading basics for accuracy

A bit over simplified though still a good place to start IMHO. What do I mean by over simplified. Eric does not mention his annealing process that aids his consistent combustion. He does not mention his automated processes that allow for consistency with every step. Have not seen where he reveals his die choice for his application.

He does do a great job of promoting Lapua & Berger for competition.

As I sat there in the sunshine with nothing but my thoughts, pondering what else can I do to get my groups more consistenty inside the inner circle.... I usually put 2 sometimes 3 inside the 1" ring with the others outside.

...and it's getting monotonous...

Grabbed my allen wrench set from the truck and snugged the legs on my Atlas. Huh, who knew.

Has anyone weighed the new 6mm ARC case to see how great a variation in case weight there is?
