Longer barrel, accurate - 6mm ARC upper
Posted by: CZ527 Guy - 07-31-2022, 02:45 PM - Forum: 6mmARC AR15s and Semi-Autos - Replies (8)

Considering a  upper to add 6mm ARC for a Rock river arms lower. I am vey Happy with a 22" barrel on a CZ527 bolt action rifle. Erroring on the side of longer barrel, school me on selecting a upper for an AR?

Thanks!

Making 6 Arc from Hornady 6.5 Grendel
Posted by: grayfox - 07-26-2022, 11:46 PM - Forum: 6mmARC Ammunition and Reloading - Replies (2)

So 6 Arc brass is still nowhere to be found.
I'm not desperate but would really like to increase my brass count.
So..........
Turns out I have some new Hornady and new Starline 6.5 cases... maybe I could try converting some of that?
I settled on trying the hornady b/c it has the potential of being the closest case capacity to current 6 Arc, which is also Hornady.  Might try some starline sometime too if I get brave, or bored (!!)
So I also decided to use new unfired brass since I don't want to do any annealing.  I figure the new brass has "just" been annealed so doing it again shouldn't be necessary.
I also bought the Frankford universal case trimmer, for placement on my drill (it says use a 1/2" but I have a variable 3/8 and it works fine for this.  also a drill press but that seems kind of overkill.
I was going to try to shorten the shoulder on the 6.5 die first but that didn't do anything... turns out that's not needed I can do it all with my 6 Arc die.
First I trimmed back a few cases by 0.025 (I was shooting for 0.030 which is the OAL delta but o well).   Chamfer inside and out.
Then lubed them up (RCBS case lube smeared on my fingers and then onto the case), and used the 6 Arc die (Hornady) to resize but leaving the shoulder a bit long, at 1.199" - thinking I would need to do a 2-step.  Then went to 1.185 (as it turns out).  Worked great.  I then just did a few going in 1-step from the trim to 1.185 directly and again, perfect.  The final OAL came out to 1.485, datum point on shoulder 1.185.  (The trim went down to 1.482 OAL, so the case growth during the down-size to 6mm lengthened the case only about 0.003-0.004")

So now I have 10 test cases downsized from 6.5 Grendel to 6 Arc, in new Hornady.
Some notes, this was with new brass, I imagine although don't know, that it would also work for 1x fired... how many more firings without first annealing, I don't know.
Also, don't know how this translates to, say, 6.5 Starline brass or other mfrs.  Maybe yes, maybe no, just sayin'.
Will try attach a pic of my drill "setup" pretty basic.

  Reloading suggestions
Posted by: Spj0487 - 07-25-2022, 12:11 PM - Forum: 6mmARC Ammunition and Reloading - Replies (3)

Hello everyone this is my first post. I am trying to get some references since I’m about to start reloading my 6arc. Currently running a AR15 with a Faxon 20 inch barrel shooting hornady factory loads 108 ELD-M. These are the chronograph velocities and information I have for this round using a magneto chronograph. My question is is this a higher than normal velocity for my set up and if not what other most closely mimics the factory powder used by Hornady. I have already taken down a pig at 645 yards with this set up and like to keep it if possible. Thanks

What is your view of the US Constitution?
Posted by: alwie - 07-23-2022, 04:26 AM - Forum: Politics & Religion - Replies (5)

It is hard for me to believe that some have a negative view of The US Constitution (link here).

To me and my family, The Constitution is one of the greatest features of this country. You see, both my parents are immigrants to the USA. And both grew up in countries that oppressed their populations all in the name of  “protection”.  I pray that God continues to bless These United States of America and its Constitution!

  Powders and Bullets
Posted by: Stonegables - 07-12-2022, 01:15 PM - Forum: 6mmARC Ammunition and Reloading - Replies (4)

At this time, 6mm ARC was launched 2+ years ago. As I just got a 20" gas gun (1:7.85) and have a few once fired brass with reloading hardware, CFE223 and Hornady 105 HPBT on the way, which powers are working best in gas guns with which bullets? I am primarily interested in shooting groups at 1000 yards. Therefore the powders that give the highest velocities with the lowest SD and ES with 105-108 bullets within gas gun pressures at what I am looking for. Is CFE223 the best? Does Hornady's relatively inexpensive 105 HPBT bullet have the fight stuff?

  Extraction problems?

Hopefully this will remind some, and prevent others from being dumb like me...

My 3rd attempt yesterday at making my new rifle run proved even worse.

Naturally, being my own worst enemy I tried everything and it just kept getting worse, which was a clue I completely ignored.

With mounting frustration blinding me until my feeble brain finally decided it might be a good idea to swing the brass catcher out of the way and have a look.

Where have I seen this before...? A quick search was all it took.

Varget & 95 gr VLD Targets
Posted by: StoneHendge - 07-11-2022, 05:23 AM - Forum: 6mmARC Ammunition and Reloading - Replies (3)

Haven't shot the ARC in a few months for various reasons. The Grendel's gotten the call for AR Matches since my 105 gr RDF stash ran out and I've had a great load with 123 gr Scenars, plus it's set up is a clone of my PRS Creedmoor) but that stash is thin and word on the street is that accommodating customers other than Ukraine is not on the top of Lapuas to do list these days (especially with powder for all you VV fans). So back to the drawing board. The 95 gr VLD Targets always seem to be in stock somewhere (including the shelf at Bruno's 15 minutes away), so.....

16" Lilia with MLGS
Base sized 4x never annealed nickel Starline Grendel brass with pockets that accept a no go gauge
Varget from a Chargemaster 1500 dropped through a 5" drop tube
GM 205M
COAL 2.25" / BTO 1.675" (a little under a 0.02" jump)

4 shot strings with the first being one shot through a cold bore. I cleaned it before the last match I used it I but didn't afterwards. Probably 75 rounds at the match. I didn't want to clean in it before this test since a barrel is always a tad fast after cleaning. 92 degrees. 10 minute break between 27.6 and 27.8 (cold range).

Charge / Velocity / SD / ES

27.2 / 2552
27.4 / 2570 / 3 / 7
27.6 / 2588/ 5 / 13
27.8 / 2606 / 7 / 17
28.0 / 2624 / 4  / 11

Shot with magnetospeed on the 0.75" contour barrel. I was stringing vertically likely due to the fact that almost all of my shooting has been with a MBA 1 with the adjustable LOP the last few months and I wasn't getting my shoulder into the carbine stock consistently. Plus, it was on a smooth concrete bench which inhibits getting load into the bipod consistently. And it was at 10x - most of my paper shooting has been through an XTR3 at 30x recently. Nonetheless, the vertical was never worse than 1". The worst horizontal dispersion was 0.5" and the best was 0.15" ( the last, which could partially be attributed to getting more comfortable on the stock). No pressure signs or timing induced markings on brass.

I'm inclined to follow up at 27.4 to keep it milder for the brass and since another 50-60 fps doesn't really get much. Flatter than the 105 RDFs at 2440 with Varget and virtually negligible additional winddrift at 700 yards. Felt recoil was also noticable less at 27.4 vs. 28.0 (and vs. the 105s, which is a big plus with a 7 lb rifle). But I'll probably play around at 28.0 too.

Looking at the numbers, something struck me as practically impossible and certainly not repeatable, but gives me great confidence in the combo. I wonder if anyone else can pick it up......
