  Hornady Black powder
Posted by: KenC - 08-01-2021, 04:15 PM - Forum: 6mmARC Ammunition and Reloading - Replies (8)

Just pulled 2 boxes(40 rnds) of Hornady Black due to them getting very high FPS(2921 hi) and not grouping. Well, on a calibrated scale, they ranged from 30.4gr to 31.4gr. Kinda broad range, wouldn't you say? Going to take them all down to a non-compressed load of 28.6gr start and see what they do. I ran 28.9gr of LVR on a Barnes 105 and it got 2815. These 2 boxes were the last of a certain lot. The next 5 are from another lot. Will probably fire 1 and check the speed. Hmmmm.

Just setting up a new ARC in AR, glad this forum is here. How do I post pictures, (just one) and get email notices of replies to my posts? Thought I checked all the right boxes, and when I try to load .PDF file pictures, I get a box that says, can't load files because of the following reasons " but there are no reasons ???? Thanks, and Hello rsbhunter

  Arc problems AGAIN!!!
Posted by: rsbhunter - 07-27-2021, 02:18 AM - Forum: 6mmARC Build Help & Troubleshooting - Replies (15)

New brass 1st firing....book load, 29.4,29.7 lever, Berger 105 BT Target, .020 off . Tried to post pictures, but won't let me. Anyway, have shot Hornady Black and new load 6.5 cases necked down.On the new cases necked down had 4 cases crack, from body shoulder junction down the body between 1/4" to almost 3/4" long. None of the Hornady  cases had cracks, or were scratched. The new cases other than the 4 I have discovered so far look ok. I did have some that after sizing, had the "belt".  I discarded the belted ones...but I am really skeptical about reloading any of the new/ resized cases....I was expecting the Hornady brass to be the throw away brass, but even though the primers were flat, the brass held up better than the new cases. Would really appreciate an education on the idiosyncrasies of loads, brass, tricks to make the ARC run smoothly. I do have 100  6.5 Grendle Lapua brass I could size, but till I know it's not going to be one and done, I won't risk it. Thanks for any help....rsbhunter

  6mm ARC vs 243 Win
Posted by: CZ527 Guy - 07-26-2021, 01:58 AM - Forum: 6mmARC Ammunition and Reloading - Replies (1)

Ever compare hunting loads performance on factory 243 WIN loads to 6mm ARC 103 ELDX? I thought they  would be close though I was surprised to see which one was ahead at 300 & 400 yards in terms of energy on target.

Was not expecting the round loaded for an lower max pressure, gas gun limits to outperform the higher case capacity higher pressure range 243. Key here is barrel twist & BC limit for each barrel.

6ARC really does have an opportunity to outshine the 243 at distance. As a reloader Im a bit torn in choosing a hunting projectile between the high BC that I am not accustomed to need and other great options that will perform equally well & arguably better in some cases inside of 200 yards where 90% or greater of my deer shots have presented themselvs.

Suppose selection will depend on my scouting prior to season. Hope to have two bolt action rifles available by deer season. been nearly 6 months now I have been waiting on the barrel for the CZ 527. Hope she is not too much longer. perhaps I may have each bolt action rifle dialed in for a different bullet.

  12" barrel... 6.5 Grendel vs 6mm ARC
Posted by: 7mmShooter - 07-25-2021, 09:32 PM - Forum: 6mmARC Ammunition and Reloading - Replies (6)

Hey y'all, looking for anyone who's run the 12" Monster barrels that BluntForceTrauma sells, Or any other same length barrel comparisons are helpful as well! I'm curious how close they run with their respective factory loads, say 108gr ELD in the 6, and 123gr ELD in the 6.5... The research I've done so far tells me it should be pretty much a coin flip situation at close/medium range with the 6 ARC taking the long range advantage. Thinking a 12" 6mm ARC with 92gr Cavity Back MKZ or the 103gr ELD-X could be pretty sweet little rig!

Thanks in advance (reposted from 6.5 Grendel Forum)

  Thoughts on freebore
Posted by: BassinDmax - 07-25-2021, 03:40 AM - Forum: 6mmARC Ammunition and Reloading - Replies (9)

I'm running an X-Caliber 20" barrel on an AR platform and I'm curious if I may have a shorter then spec freebore. It was cut with PT&G reamer and the drawing shows a freebore of .0899", but I wonder, is it? I'm running my start loads at .020" off jam. What I'm finding is a lot of bullet stuffed in the case. I'm using the Hornady L-n-L Bullet comparator tool with the Short Action Custom inserts to take all my measurements. I'm getting a base to ogive of 1.590" and COAL 2.243" with the Hornady 103 ELD-X, Berger 105 Target is 1.592" and 2.191", Sierra 107 SMK is 1.586" and 2.243" and Berger 108 Target is 1.590" and 2.215". Just seems like I should be able to get more bullet out of the case, but I only have .020" to play with before concern of jamming into the lands. I'm considering having the throat cut a little deeper, I could definitely add more length and still be under mag length. What has your all experience been with seating depth in the 6ARC? Are my findings abnormal or is this normal for seating depth?

First, the gun...Aero enhanced upper and hand guard , 24" EABCO bbl, seekin's adjustable gas block.Rubber city bolt. Buffer is rifle standard with 2 tungsten weights and heavy spring. Lower was being used on 243 lbc theand worked great. Factory "Black" ammo works ok, hand loads are 29. XX gr Leverevoloution with Berger 105gr bt target...does it sound like over gassed, or under? Have been using brass catcher, so I don't know ejection clocking....will check tomorrow... Was just curious if there is a common answer to this ? Thanks for any suggestions... rsbhunter

  Hornady Black temp sensitive
Posted by: KenC - 07-24-2021, 12:50 PM - Forum: 6mmARC Ammunition and Reloading - Replies (9)

Hi All. I went out yesterday in the afternoon in SE Louisiana and it was 93 out(damn hot and humid). Wanted to run through some Hornady Black, for the brass, and had 50 rnds of resized Starline brass to fire form using cheap 100gr bullets(picked up 500 pulled bullets). First cold bore shot with the Black was 2921fps. It settled down to 2875. They seem to running quite hot, so I surmise the powder is quite heat sensitive. The primers Hornady uses were all flattened. On some of the Hornady brass, the belt line is visible. Basically, I ordered what I could just for the brass. I am thinking about pulling all I have left and reducing the charge(do an OCW) or replacing it with LVR. All of the 50 resized Starline case looked great. They all measure 1.190" at the Datum. Every last one of them. At least I have my chamber now for them. The Hornady came in at 1.190" for only one case with a few at 1.191" and the rest at mostly 1.192" and one at 1.193". Go figure. Undecided Time to clean, inspect, anneal and run them thru the dies. Any of y'all seeing high fps with the black? Oh, the barrel is a 24" McGowen.
