  Factory Ammo Velocity
Posted by: brazz04 - 01-16-2021, 01:44 AM - Forum: 6mmARC AR15s and Semi-Autos - Replies (25)

So I've decided I'm going to build a 12" ARC based on one of BFT's barrels.  In the mean time it will live as a 12" grendel with a monster barrel, but I figure it would be cool to have both and shoot the one with ammo available.  That said, can we get a thread started with velocities from factory ammo.  I know there aren't many short barrels as of yet, but I think a good set of data with many barrel lengths that was easy access would be awesome.

Something like barrel length, ammo type, velocity would be perfect!  Thanks in advance!

To Crimp or Not to Crimp...
Posted by: Old Bob - 12-31-2020, 03:23 PM - Forum: 6mmARC Ammunition and Reloading - Replies (5)

That is the question. 'Tis it nobler to taper crimp, roll crimp or not crimp at all. I've always crimped bullets when I reloaded for my 3 gun ammo. I put slight taper crimps on all my 5.56mm NATO & 7.62 NATO ammo. I'd run the taper die down until it contacted the bullet, then turn it down one quarter rotation & lock the die ring. I started doing that after experiencing bullet set-backs during a practice session with my 5.56 NATO AR.

Right now, none of the 6mm ARC ammo I've loaded is crimped. What I've been thinking I might do is experiment with case neck tension instead of the taper crimp. I have L.E. Wilson dies with different neck sizing bushings. What I have in the Wilson sizing die right now is the bushing suggested by Wilson which gives the Lapua brass I have a .001" smaller inside diameter than the same brass sized in the Hornady die. The AA brass I sized in the Wilson die has the same inside diameter as the AA brass sized in the Hornady die. Obviously, the Lapua brass is thicker in the neck than the AA brass. Do I change the bushing down .001" for the AA brass or put a slight taper crimp on it?

All the brass I'm using is resized 6.5 Grendel brass. The Lapua brass with their thicker necks, will it cause chambering problems? Dang! So many questions & no answers yet. I guess I'll get my answers eventually... Undecided

  How Low Will You Go?

Has anyone loaded any light weight varmint bullets for your 6mm ARC? I've been thinking about doing that with Nosler 55gr Varmageddon bullets. There's no 6mm ARC loading data for that specific bullet that I could find but Hornady has data for their 58gr V-Max. I figure I'll start there but my powder stash is short on powders suitable for light 6mm bullets. AA2230 & VIHT N-130 are the only powders I have from Hornady's data. I want to use varmint bullets in the 6mm ARC 'cause I know where an over-populated prairie pup town is & I want a little more reach than my .223 Rem Savage 110.

One more thing to ponder... at a spin rate of 1:7.5", I'm wondering if the 55gr Varmageddon bullet will hold together? I've had Sierra 52gr .223 bullets disintegrate in my 1:8" twist Savage.

The cataract surgery on my right eye went well. Now, I just need the left one done. That'll be on 01/11. Smile

Question Nosler 100gr Partiton Bullets
Posted by: Old Bob - 12-27-2020, 02:35 PM - Forum: 6mmARC Ammunition and Reloading - Replies (5)

Has anyone done any work with Nosler 100gr 6mm partitions bullets? I'm wondering about seating depth. The partitions are not as sleek as the 103gr ELD-X bullets I've already loaded to fit in my magazines. I did load a few of the partitions to fit my mags, but because of their blunter shape, it's looking like they might be set out too long & maybe contact the lands when chambered.

I have the Hornady 6mm ARC modified case for determining bullet seating depth but no barrel yet (maybe to arrive soon after 01/21... I hope!). I'm thinking I'll go ahead & finish my ladders with the bullets at mag depth & then re-seat them again later if I have to.

In the pic, the Nosler bullet is on the left. The bullet on the right is Hornady factory ammo 108gr ELD-M.
